Makai’s journey with SOLO started with a WFR course that changed the direction of his education and career. Wilderness medicine became the first subject that fully engaged him and eventually led him to ski patrol, EMS, paramedic training, firefighting, and becoming a SOLO instructor. Teaching for SOLO has strengthened his skills as an educator and helped him earn respect as an instructor within his fire department. More importantly, former students have contacted him after using their SOLO training during real emergencies, including rescues involving friends, loved ones, and strangers. For Makai, the greatest reward of being a SOLO instructor is knowing his teaching continues to help people long after a course ends.
