ADVANCED WILDERNESS FIRST AID (AWFA)
This course is designed for summer camp instructors, outdoor guides, and professionals leading extended trips in remote wilderness settings where medical assistance may be significantly delayed. It provides comprehensive first aid training beyond basic emergency care, equipping participants with essential skills to assess and manage injuries, illnesses, and environmental emergencies in multi-day settings. Ideal for forest guides, trail guides, and outdoor educators. The training ensures they can provide effective patient care and coordinate evacuations when necessary. AWFA courses specifically cater to individuals leading half-, full-, or short multi-day trips in areas with reliable cell or satellite phone service but where outside assistance may still be delayed for hours. Graduates often work as summer camp leaders, trip leaders in college outdoor programs, residential camps, or as instructors and guides in wilderness activities. SOLO's WAFA course ensures participants are well-prepared to handle medical situations in remote settings, fostering both confidence and competence in wilderness first aid.
Students can complete the 4 day course for an AWFA certification.
If you have a WFA, you can attend the AWFA Part II (2 days) for an AWFA certification.
WFA and AWFA Differences
WFA: 16 hours of training, usually 2 days. Intro level. Focus on short trips, front-country or backcountry with help reachable within a few hours. Scenarios are present, but time is limited. Goal is basic competence and confidence in self and skills.
AWFA: 36 to 40 hours over 4 days, or a 2-day bridge on top of an existing WFA. Designed for trip leaders and guides on multi-day or more remote trips where evacuation is slower and help is delayed. More scenario hours with complex problems, multiple patients, and longer care windows. Stronger emphasis on leadership, team roles, communication, and written SOAP notes or similar documentation.
