SOLO Campus Tour

SOLO is located in the village of Conway, New Hampshire, on a hill overlooking the Saco River Valley and the Presidential Range of the White Mountains. The campus sits on 300 acres of northern hardwood forest dominated by beech, birch, and maple trees, along with stands of towering white pines. The various buildings are tucked into the hillside with forest on all sides. SOLO is a quiet and peaceful place. There are three main buildings at SOLO: Kaila Hall, the main teaching facility housing classrooms, study areas, and the library; Toad Hall, our two-story, 30-person dormitory; and The Octagon, where our administrative offices, kitchen, and dining hall reside. A smattering of other SOLO buildings dot the landscape. Classes are held in Kaila Hall and the practical training scenarios are held outside in the surrounding woods.

Outside the classroom, the recreational opportunities in the area are nearly limitless. With the White Mountain National Forest right outside our door, spare time can be spent hiking, rock and ice climbing, paddling, trail running, mountain biking, fishing, and doing just about anything else you can think of in 800,000 acres of mountains, lakes, and streams. Many on SOLO’s staff have spent decades trying to wring every bit of recreational potential out of the surrounding countryside—and they haven’t come close to maxing out the possibilities.

We hope the images on this page help you understand more about what a unique and beautiful place SOLO is—and we hope they entice you to join us for a course here on our New Hampshire campus.

A Main Building

This huge lodge, built in the mid-70s when the dream of SOLO began to come true, is an amazing teaching facility with classrooms and plenty of space to practice skills. Open, airy, inviting, and heated with one of the biggest woodstoves you will ever see, this is a wonderful place to learn (and make friends).
